The Reichsluftahrtministerium decided in 1934 to develop a two-engine long-range fighter. It was to replace firepower for manoeuvrability that would be lost by its large size. The 110 worked well in early conflict, but once it met serious resistance over Britain it proved a disaster. It was later adapted as a bomber interceptor, when situations over Germany became perilous, and it proved extremely effective with its heavy armarment. Unescorted bomber formations could be devastated, but once fighters became involved, the 110s were in a lot of trouble.

The "Schrage Musik" (Jazz Music) adaption on the 110 was a set of cannons placed on an angle on top of the 110. It was used most effectively against Lancaster bombers that did not had a MG port to fire at that angle. The 110 would trail the bomber quietly, get into position, and fire at the exposed underbelley of the plane where its cargo of bombs and fuel ignited extremely easily.
