This tank began mass-production in 1939, Daimler-Benz was the initial producer. Rheinmetall-Borsig, Krupp, MAN were also given orders

This tank was, for a time, the most potent tank found in decent numbers within the German army.

A prevailing want by the progressive Generals such as Guderian was to arm the Pzkpfw III with a 50mm cannon, as the British, Russians and French were all arming their tanks with incresingly larger calibres (40mm, 47mm or 45mm respectively). The Ordinance Department, however, objected, as it viewed the 37mm currently in use by troops as a better alternative supply-wise. This was clearly a mistake, but it was implemented anyway.

Thankfully, the Pzkpfw III was built with a big enough turret ring to accomodate the larger 50mm gun when the current weapon proved totally ineffective.

Applique armor, and armor skirts to avoid  deadly HEAT projectiles were added as the war went on.

Conversions such as the Sturmgeschütz III, Sturmhaubitze 42, and the Flamm variant (14mm Flammenwerfer) kept the PzKpfw IIIs chassies in good use after the tank became a relic as a battle tank.
