The R 35 replaced the FT-17. The R 35 was one of the most modern tanks of the time. Its' handicap, however, was that it was armed with only a 37mm cannon. The cannon originated from 1918. Additionally, it only had a crew of two men. That meant that while one drove the tank while the other commanded, directed, fired, and reloaded. The German troops ran over this tank because the French did not evne begin to use it in groups - French tank tactics taught single attacks. Many of the R 35 bodies were later converted by Germans into self-propelled PaKs.
