Rat Profiles

Cornered Rat Software, the makers of World War Two Online, are not robots. They are in fact human beings. Get to know them better through these candid question and answer profiles. We'd like to thank them for taking the time to allow us fans to get a glimpse behind the scenes and get to know the developers a little better.

Name and Handle?

Geof 'DocDoom' Evans

How did you get your handle? Does it mean anything important?

Originally ... I think it had something to do with the Dr.Doom comic book character. I'm not sure really, it could be just that my friends know me as a terminal optimist, the sarcastic sons a bitches :)

What is your position at CRS/Playnet?

Producer and Chief Editor of World@War

What does a typical day at CRS include for you?

All kinds of things. There are always coding and production issues to be resolved. It's a little like "let's make a deal".

What is the strangest thing that's ever happened to you during work?

I don't think I should mention any names. This is a game development company. Everything here is strange.

What/who would you most like to see modeled in WWII Online?

The environment detail. Things that happen unpredictably. The "oh shit!" factor. Weather and it's affects. And Rat-Patrol jeeps !

What should you really be doing now?

Probably another re-sheduling of something.

Favorite WWII era unit/vehicle?

No such thing as favorites. I like PT Boats, twin-engined Attack aircraft, the SAS ...

What do you think the most interesting conflict of WWII was? Why?

Battle of Britain. Midway. New Guinea. Battle of the Bulge. Kursk. Stalingrad. They all had their moments.

Do you listen to music while working? What type?

I make up my own MP3 playlists. Everything from AC/DC to Blue Oyster Cult to SRV to Robben Ford. There's a lot of great music out there.

Favorite computer games (besides anything you've worked on before)? Why?

Nowadays ... that would be a tough call. I like games where "predictability" doesn't make itself immediately obvious. I have almost zero interest in anything that isn't multiplayer. If it doesn't have some form of complex strategy, it would suck.

What portion of WWIIOL are you looking forward to playing the most (air, land, or sea)?

PT boats. Tanks. Air to Ground. German MG42 motorcycle patrol. Air to Air is always good. Did I avoid the question adequately enough ... or should I mention something else you can do in WWIIOL ?

How long have you been in game development?

Hmmm ... I was involved in running AirWarrior on OZhost during the early '90s. Scenario design, arena parameters, we even dicked with the code a bit ... improving certain things. Then I started writing about multiplayer gaming and their communities after getting DEEPLY involved in Confirmed Kill and WarBirds as a player.

What do you feel is the most important part of the computer, hardware-wise?

All of it. Hell, even the electrical connectors need to be in there :)

Do you have a degree (if applicable) in your field of development? Where did you earn it?

I have a Dip.(Commercial Programming) from the DSI Institute in Melbourne. Also an Assoc.Dip.(Creative Writing) from Holmsglen CT in Melbourne. That's Melbourne Australia, not Florida, in case you weren't sure :)

What is your favorite book? What are you reading now?

I'm with Snail on this one. There are no favorites. Just good stuff and bad stuff. I'm reading Adolf Dickfelds "Footsteps of the Hunter" right now.

What is another computer game you're looking forward to playing (besides WWIIOL)? Any specific reasons?

When (if) Mad Max ever happens, I'll be in there, that could be an awesome game.

If you could go back in time and follow around anyone for a day, who would it be?

Joan of Arc. Merlin would have been interesting too.

What's your favorite thing to do in the WWIIOL Beta?

Find the holes.

Which WWII historical figure would you like to smack upside the head?

What, only one ? The answer is Wild Bill Kelso.

If your favorite allied general of World War II was a fat-free ranch salad dressing that was sold in a grocery store chain, which chain would he be sold in and why?

Fat free dressing sucks. Go Italian if you're serious about salad dressing. I tend to make my own anyway :)
